Tire Deflation
Reduce tire pressure to 12-15 PSI. This expands the tire’s contact patch 2-3 times. Without it, you will instantly sink up to your axles. Always bring your own air compressor to reinflate on the way back.
Disabling ESP (Electronics)
Completely disable Traction Control (ESP/VSC). In the sand, wheel spin is necessary to maintain momentum. Engaged electronics will choke the engine at the slightest slip.
Recovery Kit
Never go off-roading alone. Your trunk must contain: a snatch strap, shackles, a shovel, and sand tracks. Metal cables are strictly prohibited—if they snap, they are lethal.

More Than Just Traffic
The car culture of the Emirates is unique. From night cruises along JBR to Friday drives up Jebel Jais and spontaneous rescue operations in the sands of Al Badayer. There’s no such thing as someone else’s problem here: a tourist stuck in the dunes or a beginner broken down on the highway will always be helped by a passing local driver. It is an informal support network that unites people from all over the world.
Rental or Your Own Ride?

Long-term Rental
Monthly Lease (from 1500 AED/mo)Zero paperwork. No Emirates ID required, just a driver’s license and passport. All maintenance and insurance are handled by the rental company.
Deposit hold. Between 1,000 and 3,000 AED is frozen on your card for up to 30 days after returning the car (in case of delayed traffic fines).
Hidden markups. For every pass under a Salik toll gate (officially 4 AED), rental companies charge a 5-6 AED admin fee.
Owning a Car
Buying used from the market or dealerFreedom of movement. You can easily go off-roading (if it’s an SUV) and drive to neighboring emirates without mileage restrictions.
Bureaucracy (Tasjeel). Before buying a used car, you must pass the RTA vehicle inspection (170 AED), otherwise, the car cannot be re-registered.
Strict residency rules. To register a vehicle, you must have resident status (Emirates ID) and an active Traffic File.

Salik
Barrier-free toll-gate system. When passing under the gate, 4 AED is deducted from the windshield sticker account. No stopping required.
Black Points
Penalty points. Issued for serious traffic violations (speeding, red light running, aggressive driving).
Mulkiya Important
Vehicle registration card. Renewed annually. Driving with an expired Mulkiya results in a 500 AED fine.
Tasjeel
Official RTA centers. Used for mandatory vehicle testing before selling or renewing a Mulkiya (170 AED).
Traffic File
Your unique T.C.F. number (driver’s dossier). You cannot buy a car in your name without opening one.
Minor Accident: Online Reporting
Forget about waiting for a patrol car on the shoulder. In the UAE, police do not dispatch officers to the scene for minor accidents without injuries. Everything is handled via your smartphone.
1,000 AED Fine for Obstructing Traffic
It is strictly prohibited to leave vehicles on the roadway after a collision. Take 2-3 wide photos of the cars’ positions, license plates, and damages, then immediately move to the hard shoulder or the nearest parking area.
Dubai Police App
Open the official police application. Navigate to the section Services → Report Traffic Accident. In Abu Dhabi, use the Saeed app for this process.
Data Entry and Photos
Upload the photos you took. Enter the license plate numbers and scan the driving licenses (yours and the other party’s). The system will automatically determine your location via GPS.
Receiving the Police Report (SMS)
Within 10-15 minutes, you will receive an SMS with a link to the official report. You can use this reference number to contact your insurance company immediately.
Surviving the Highways
Driving from Dubai to another emirate or heading to the mountains has its own rhythm. Here are the unspoken local rules for the E11 and E311 highways that will save your nerves.
The Left Lane Cult
The far left lane is strictly for overtaking. If someone flashes their high beams from behind (even if you are doing 140 km/h), you must move to the right. It’s not aggression, but local etiquette; failing to comply can result in a fine for obstructing traffic.
Hard Shoulder Danger
Stopping on the highway shoulder to rest, set up navigation, or take photos is deadly dangerous. The traffic flows at 120-140 km/h. Only pull over at official rest areas or ADNOC/ENOC petrol stations.
Winter Fogs
From December to March, highways get covered in a «milk» of zero visibility. The biggest mistake tourists make is driving with their hazard lights on. This disorients traffic (hazard lights mean a full stop). Use fog lights only!
+50°C Season: Cabin Survival
From May to October, a car’s interior in the sun heats up to 70-80 degrees Celsius. This is not just uncomfortable; it’s a real threat to plastic, leather, and items left inside. Local survival rules:
50% Thermal Window Tinting
According to local laws, you can tint all windows (except the windshield) with a film that allows up to 50% light transmission. Forget about cheap dyes. The only thing that saves you here is Ceramic Film (Ceramic Tint), which reflects up to 90% of infrared radiation.
Pressure Release: 1 cm Gap
When parking in the open sun (outdoor parking), always leave two side windows slightly open by a few millimeters. This will break the greenhouse effect inside and prevent the windshield from cracking due to the excessive pressure of expanding hot air.
Gadget Detonation
Every year, dozens of cars burn to the ground because of items left in the cabin. When the interior heats up above 60 degrees, spontaneous explosions occur with: lighters, hand sanitizers, deodorant aerosol cans, soda cans, and Power Banks. Move everything to the trunk, where the temperature is lower.

Hidden Reserves
Maintaining a car in the UAE is expensive if you don’t know the local loopholes. Experienced expats save thousands of dirhams a year simply by ditching familiar but unprofitable habits.
The Dust Tax
Left your dirty car outside? In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this is considered «damaging the city’s image» — an inspector will issue a 500 AED fine. Washing your car with a hose in the yard is also prohibited.
Hack: Use mobile apps like CAFU or order a «Waterless Wash» right in the mall parking lot for 15-20 dirhams.
The SMS Parking Trap
When paying for parking via SMS to 7275 (Dubai), the telecom operator charges an additional 30 fils for each message. Over a year of daily parking, this adds up to a significant loss.
Hack: If you park your car at the office every day, buy a Seasonal Parking Card (Card A, B, or C) for 3 months. Alternatively, pay for parking with zero fees directly through the RTA app (e-Purse wallet).
The Agency Repair Illusion
When getting Comprehensive Insurance, insurance agents aggressively push the «Agency Repair» (official dealer repair) option. This increases the policy cost by 20-30%.
Hack: If your car is more than 3 years old, confidently choose Premium Garage Repair. The level of top-tier garages in Dubai (in Al Quoz or DIP) is in no way inferior to dealers, and the insurance will be significantly cheaper.

Forget arrow-straight highways. For those who love steering, switchbacks, and beautiful window views, the community has highlighted three must-visit destinations.
Jebel Jais
The local «Nürburgring». 30 kilometers of perfect mountain serpentine with three ascending lanes. A mecca for sports car owners and bikers. Tip: check your brake pads before descending.
Hatta Dam
A scenic drive through the reddish cliffs of the Al Hajar Mountains to a turquoise lake. Perfect for family SUV trips. Tip: the E44 route may partially pass through the Oman border, so bring your passports.
Khor Fakkan (Sharjah)
A trans-emirate highway (Sharjah-Khor Fakkan Road) carved straight through the mountains. Features 5 long tunnels with incredible acoustic effects (a paradise for exhaust sound fans) leading out to the Indian Ocean.
